1 JOHN 3:16a "By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us…"

Introduction

èLove must express itself in deeds.  'Actions speak more loudly than words.'

è "God is love."  He must display love.

èWe discover, discern, perceive, and are made to know, the love which He has for us based on the fact that "He laid down His life for us."

There are many acts of God in which His love is very clear, but most of us fail to see it.

The Pentecostal Priority: Separating the Essential from the Non-Essential PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 September 2008 18:00

Sunday-PM, September 7th, 2008; Glendive Assembly of God Church; Pastor Curt

There is a vast difference between what is important and what is essential. IMPORTANT: lifestyle; worship expressions, church government, and doctrinal distinctives. ESSENTIAL: redemptive truths!

When the Bible is not definitive, the conclusion should be obvious. The Holy Spirit gives ADAPTIVE FREEDOM! The Lord of the Church knew in His wisdom that various times, cultures, and circumstances would dictate variety in the important = the non-essentials. The essentials are the will and works of God through the non-essentials!

IN A PIT WITH A LION ON A SNOWY DAY

2 SAMUEL 23:20-21 "There was also Benaiah son of Jehoida, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel.  He did many heroic deeds, which included killing two of Moab's mightiest warriors.  Another time he chased a lion down into a pit.  Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it.  Another time, armed only with a club, he killed a great Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear.  Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with it."

èBenaiah wasn't the odds-on favorite!

èBenaiah 2-to-1 underdog fighting two of Moab's greatest warriors; this was not a tag-team match; Benaiah was double-teamed!

èEgyptian giant was the 10-to-1 favorite against Benaiah; club versus spear = weapon advantage; 7 and ½ feet tall Egyptian = longer reach = size advantage…  Wouldn't it be great to see an instant replay of Benaiah wrenching the spear out of the Egyptian's giant hands?  How did he even get close enough to grab it?

→God prepares people for His message as He prepares us to share it.

→The message of Christ is really simple.

→God is already working in people's lives.

→Evangelism is not about knocking on doors. It's about praying for God to open them.

→Evangelism is about effectively responding to unbelievers.

→God is at work in people's lives uniquely and individually.

→We need to be on God's schedule. Only He knows when someone is ready.

→Evangelism isn't an option – how we evangelize is.

→The greatest instructors concerning evangelism are the apostles Paul and Peter. The greatest model is our Lord Jesus Himself.

1 TIMOTHY 3:1-7; TITUS 1:5-9

èThe words "bishop," "elder," and "overseer" are words used interchangeably in the New Testament to refer to what we call a pastor = spiritual leader of a local church; a Christian 'officer' in general charge of a church.  These terms suggest maturity and experience and responsibility.

??? --- What do you want in a pastor?  A prophet?  Someone who spends time with you and makes you feel good about yourself?  Someone you can go to a ballgame with and introduce, with healthy pride, to your friends?  Someone who loves God with passion?

èLet's look at the Bible and see that qualifications that God has laid out.  Then you can be in constant prayer for a pastor with those (or a majority of those) qualifications…

FINAL VERSES:

The Gospel of LUKE – LUKE 24:53 Jesus' disciples "…were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God…"

The Gospel of MARK – MARK 16:20 "Jesus' disciples "…went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following…"

èThe MARKETPLACE is for evangelization.

èThe MEETING PLACE is for ministry to the saints.

èThe MARKETPLACE is for ministry to the lost.

èIn the MEETING PLACE people are to be endued with the power of God.

èIn the MARKETPLACE people are to minister by the power of God.

The Pentecostal Priority: Facing the Non-Essentials PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 13 July 2008 18:00

Sunday-PM, July 13th, 2008; Glendive Assembly of God Church; Pastor Curt

The essentials of Christian faith are those scriptural truths directly impacting one's salvation: the deity of Christ, the inerrancy of Scripture, salvation by grace, the return of Christ, the lostness of man, eternal life, eternal judgment --- these are universal and unchanging.

The Pentecostal experience is not essential to salvation, but acceptance of the truth of this experience is vital to spiritual life. To identify with the Pentecostal movement and at the same time deny the Pentecostal experience is a strange paradox.

→As Pentecostals meet the challenge of Christ's Great Commission, they must cling to the great redemptive truths impacting salvation and eternal life.

→But Pentecostals must come to maturity in the area of the non-essentials. Overzealous in protecting non-essentials, the movement has spent a great deal of energy and time arguing with itself. This must be changed if the Pentecostal church is to be a significant force.
